Mengakses Internet Melalui Koneksi Dial-Up (HARDWARE)

Jika kita menghubungkan komputer ke internet dengan koneksi dial-up, ada dua perangkat tambahan yang kita tambahkan, yaitu saluran telepon dan modem. Saluran telepon dibutuhkan untuk menghubungkan komputer kita dengan ISP yang digunakan. Selanjutnya, ISP tersebut akan meneruskan koneksi kita ke internet.

Modem dibutuhkan untuk mengubah sinyal digital menjadi sinyal analog (sinyal listrik) agar dapat dikirimkan melalui saluran telepon, dan juga sebaliknya untuk mengubah sinyal listrik menjadi sinyal digital agar dapat dimengerti komputer.

Pada saat sebuah komputer mengirimkan data ke internet, modem akan mengubah sinyal digital dari komputer menjadi sinyal suara sehingga sinyal tersebut dapat dilewatkan melalui kabel telepon. Pada sisi penerima, modem akan mengubah sinyal dari kabel telepon menjadi sinyal digital, sehingga komputer berkomunikasi satu sama lain melalui kabel telepon.

Kecepatan modem mentransfer data diukur dengan satuan bits per second (bps) atau bit per detik. Pada umumnya, kecepatan transfer data modem yang ada di pasaran adalah 56 Kbps 9kilo bits per second). Ini artinya, modem tersebut dapat mentransfer data sebesar 56 kilobit setiap detiknya. 

Ada dua jenis modem, yaitu internal dan eksternal. Modem internal adalah modem yang dipasang di mainboard langsung (on board). Sedang modem eksternal adalah modem yang berada di luar main board (off board). Antara modem dan komputer dihubungkan dengan kabel. 

Pada umumnya modem internal harganya lebih murah. Hanya, kalau ingin memindah-mindah ke komputer lain agak repot. Kita harus bongkar pasang casinG CPU. Sebaliknya dengan modem eksternal, kita dapat memindah-mindah ke komputer lain tanpa membongkar casing CPU.
